The HPM-1 is a compact, rugged optical power meter designed specifically for field applications. These same characteristics also make it an extremely useful laboratory tool for checking optical powers at various locations in an optical setup, or, when paired with a laser source such as the HLS-1, for testing the insertion loss of different optical components. The meter can operate continuously for up to 20 hours on a single charge, and comes complete with a rubber protection frame, a carrying case, a rechargeable battery, a power supply, and FC, SC and ST adapters. Its bright yellow color insures easy identification in the field or in a messy laboratory environment. The meter uses a low noise InGaAs photodetector as the sensor and can measure powers as low as –70 dBm or as high as 23 dBm, depending on the power range option selected. Calibrated at 850, 980, 1310, 1480, and 1550 nm, the HPM-1 has a power measurement uncertainty below ±5%. Most surprisingly, this small instrument has a superb polarization dependence of less than 0.05 dB, comparable to more expensive desktop meters.
